Porto Dome
Most workplaces were designed for a demographic era that no longer exists. As societies age and careers extend, organizations must rethink how work and care coexist. Porto Dome explores how intergenerational workplace design can support contribution, caregiving, and human connection across the full arc of life.
Podcast Feature: Caregiving, the Longevity Society, and the Future of Work
Architect and Founder Marisa Toldo discusses caregiving, the longevity society, and the future of work in a podcast conversation with Van Vlissingen & Co.
Care Is Infrastructure
In the longevity society, living longer is no longer the challenge. Living together is.
After caring for her father living with dementia, Marisa Toldo began to see care systems differently. What looked like efficiency often concealed isolation. Nursing homes placed at the margins of cities. Generations separated into different buildings, institutions, and routines.
The problem was not simply medical. It was architectural.
This essay argues that care must be understood as infrastructure a civic system shaped by how we design workplaces, housing, neighborhoods, and community life. When generations share space, visibility, and time, care stops being a private burden and becomes a collective capacity.
Designing the longevity society means designing places where care can circulate.

As Europe enters its longevity era, the question is no longer whether care belongs in the workplace.
The real question is whether we can afford a future built on the myth of the care-free worker or whether it is time to redesign work for an ageing society, transforming invisible care costs into dignity, resilience, and long-term competitive advantage.
